The National park of Aukštaitija

The National Park of Aukštaitija (Highland) is the oldest national park in Lithuania which was founded in 1974 to preserve the junction of the unique landscape of the three areas which make Žeimena upland ecosystem, its nature and cultural values. The area of the park is 40,574 hectares, the waters take 15.5 per cent of the area and the forests cover 69 percent of the territory. It is the second national park in Lithuania according to its size. The high hills of the park offer great views of the lakes, cultivated fields and forests. Puziniškis and Šiliniškiai caps and Ladakalnis are very interesting. 126 lakes stretch in the park, mostly in the central part of the area. In the park area there is the deepest lake in Lithuania named Tauragnas (60.5 m depth).
The visitor centre of Aukštaitija (Highland) national park. Its exhibition focuses on visitors of all ages. There it will be easier to choose a route to get acquainted with the park. Lakeland formed original cultural traditions of the people who lived in the territory of the park that is why the main theme of the exposition is "Lake People". The tour in Palušė. The tour begins in Aukštatija (Highland) National Park Visitor Centre, where the park and Palūšė rural history are presented to the participants. Everyone has to visit Palūšė church which is one of the most beautiful and oldest wooden churches in Lithuania. The church was pictured on one litas paper banknote. Archaeological values of the park are presented in the archaeological exposition: a life-size barrow model presents the culture of barrows and Stone Age housing reconstruction gives us a look at the people’s way of life who lived in the area thousands years ago. 16 wooden sculptures stand along Lūšiai lake shore and they will tell the visitors beautiful legends of the area. Botanical path near Palūšė. In order to know better the flora of the park, an educational botanical path is equipped. The length of the path is 3.5 km. It is equipped near the lake Lūšiai between Palūšė and Meironys villages. The route of the path is marked by a white square with a green line. Walking along the path you can watch about 150 species of plants, of which 9 are written in the Red Book of Lithuania. 4 plant communities are exhibited in the path: green pinewood, swamps, natural grasslands and sands.
The area of the park is quite large. In order to know it better, you will have to travel. Almost all the routes of the park begin in Palūšė.
